talking

Dylan is still not talking.  Every once in awhile he'll say Momma, Dadda, go, or make sounds, but he never says a word without being prompted.  He still grunts when he wants something, like he is a little neanderthal.  I know once he starts, he probably won't stop, but I feel like he is running a little behind with his talking skills.  Any suggestion or words of reassurance?  He'll be 18 months tomorrow.  Can you believe it?  Little stinker is growing up so fast!

The little one I watch (Grant) turned two at the beginning of November.  Just in the past month has he started saying lots of words.  It's true what they say: boys just don't talk as soon as girls.  My only suggestion is to say the object of everything you hand him or he tries to hand you.  Repetition will be the way he gets it.  Also, we look at books and identify the things we see in the pictures.  Don't worry!  He's normal!

Kids do things at their own pace.  Some are just not in a hurry as others are when it comes to certain things.  I think Andrea had a good point in repetition.  That's how they learn.   You know he can say words already so I wouldn't worry and jump the gun on that.  One of my friends automatically knew what her daughter wanted and instead of asking her "what would you like?" she would just give it to her with a point of a finger.  She didn't talk for the longest time because her mom would never encourage her to do it.  Maybe try and coax him a little when he starts pointing and grunting.  He may surprise you or get totally frustrated with the situation.

I think it's totally normal!!!!  You're a great mom Chels!!!!  And Oh my gosh 18 months already???? Where has the time gone!!!!!

Yeah they do things when they are ready for sure. My grandson is  a year as you know..he signs...his mom is teaching him signs, (she has a def nephew)..so kayden knows "bite", "more", milk, and thank you..it's so flippin cute when he uses them and it is all the time.  You might just try those with him and see if he catches on faster with that then speaking???

Kayden will say "mo", mam ma (for grandma) papa, MOM (yells it) mama for Auntie Courtney..so he is taking his time as well with speaking..but I will tell ya he signs more then anything.

Thanks everyone.  Dylan was taught signs too, and uses the basics (eat, drink/milk, more, please, and thank you).  He can say Momma, but more like an entertaining sound rather than stating what he wants.  I have been saying what something is when I give something to him, and we read like crazy, too.  I guess he wants to take his sweet little time, which I guess is fine.  He did that with his walking too.  I'm just getting tired of all of the grunting.  I'm ready for the next stage!  hehe...
