Is it a blessing in disguise?

Well as you all know I have a awful commute of 80 miles each way.  I spend about 3-4 hours each day in my car.  I bought a commuter car back in 2005 and have put over 54,000 miles on that poor baby.

Anyway - my boss approached me yesterday and said that he has noticed that I've been looking tired lately.  He decided to hire his sister-in-law and LAY ME OFF!!!  I about fell over.

I've been commuting to this job for almost 5 years.  5 YEARS!!!! and have put my heart and soul into this company.  At first I was irked to no end but then he laid the conditions on me......

3 months full severence pay plus 2 weeks (cash) vacation and a written recommendation.  A little guilt money if you ask me.  He doesn't want to leave on bad terms and would like to stay in touch with me (oh sure - because he'll call to moan and groan about his SIL).

After thinking about it I have so many emotions rolling through my brain at this point.  On one hand, nepatism just doesn't play well with me and I'm pissed off.  On another hand, I'm hurt because of the time and effort I've put into this company to make it is what it is today.  On the other hand, I feel alittle relieved because I AM TIRED.  Sooooo.....

I'm starting a whole new career.  I've been studying off and on for my realtor's license.  I made a call yesterday and my realtor will hire me on the spot upon my completion.  And told me that they have more leads then they can handle at this point.

Jeff is completely relieved and thrilled with this change.  He worries constantly about me being on the road so much.  My parents are also thrilled because they worry also.  I guess in the long run it is a blessing but I'm not going to let my boss know that because I think I'll let him stew in the guilt for a little while.

Wow.  I think I would probably have the same mixed emotions.  I think I would be hurt by that decision.  Sounds to me like he is trying to do SIL a favor, and well, in order to do it he had to let you go.  I guess it could be a blessing in disguise, especially if you are tired from all that commuting.  (I know I would be!)
Everyone keeps saying the real estate business is going to turn around soon...maybe you're getting into it just in time!  I'm a strong believer in everything happens for a reason.  It just may turn out to be a good thing!

Oh, and the severance sounds reasonable to me.  At least he was thoughtful about the way he handled laying you off.  Someone at my hubby's office laid- off a girl right before lunch, then on his lunch break he went out an bought himself a new BMW.  That's an A$$-move if I ever heard of one.  And I couldn't help but laugh when I found out he had wrecked it a week later driving into the office.  Tee-hee!

Hang in there.  This could be the beginning of something great.

Perhaps a very nice blessing in disguise.  The guy is most certainly a jerk though for laying you off with or without severance pay.  It was the principal of the matter as you have been with that company for a couple of years now.  grrr Not sure what to tell you other then I hope the realty career takes off like crazy! You go girl! hugs

Thanks everyone.  Your right about it being the principle of it.  His wife put him up to it.  I think she was tired of me telling her "NO you cannot have more money".  But hey that was my job and the direction of boss man.  Stupidly I agreed to be available by cell or home phone if she has any questions.  She has no accounting experience and that's most of the job.  I know that my boss will be calling me whining and complaining and begging for her to leave.  But you know what - I will have the last laugh.

The realty market here is a buyers market right now and should only get better within the next couple of months.  The market is low cost with low interest.  Nice for realtors because alot of people are coming to the valley for lower cost housing than in the Bay Area.  We'll see.

Well, this is my first day off.  I talked to my mom last night and she told me to just rest for the first few days.  I think I'll take her up on it.  But there's alot of stuff I want to do around the house.  So there won't be any boredom here between going through closets and studying.

Doing really good.  Having a hard time adjusting to sleeping longer.  I'm used to being up 4:00 a.m. and now I get to sleep until almost 7:00 a.m. when Jeff gets up.  I find myself waking around 4 a.m.  I've been dropping Anthony off at school and then I head to the gym.  I find that I get bored throughout the day so not only am I studying but taking one room at a time and completely going through it (cleaning, scrubbing, going through closets, etc.).  I have 3 more rooms to do.  Told Jeff that I'm ready to repaint walls next.  He's going crazy with my madness - LOL.

All in all, I'm doing fine but gosh it's weird.  I've worked for the last 26 years non stop (except for holidays and vacation).  Now to be home for the next couple of months will be good for me (I think).

Thanks for asking!!!

I sounds like you're using your time productively!  Want to come to my house and clean out every room?   LOL

No thanks.  Jeff is whining because I'm making him go through all his t-shirts.  He must have 70 of them dating back to 1985 - lol.  Told him that it's time to clean out his drawers and closet.  He told me other night that he loves having me home but asking him to part with comfy clothes is a no-no - lol.

I have our closet (full wall) and 2 drawers left to do then I move on to the last thing which is the hall closet - UGH.  After that I told Jeff that I wanted to start repainting the rooms.  I'm not sure what colors I want to do this time.  I'll post pics once I'm done.

What is it with guys and their t-shirts?  Do they do the same with underwear too?

I am glad you are finding time to get things done you have not had time to do the past years.  But sometimes it's good for us to get on a rampage like that.  It's amazing what we realize we still have when we thought it was gone ages ago.

Are you driving Anthony crazy as well?
