I'm the new jewelry instructor at michaels (where I work primarily as a front end supervisor). I set up my very own classes this month and got my first official sign up today! 3 maybes and one definite.
But the real honor of this last week?
A friend ordered jewelry (2 pieces, for a decent chunk of change no less) and at the tail end of her request she added:
"One more thing, I am so very impressed with your work. I was telling the girls I work with about it so they will be having a look. I have a question to ask you, though. I work as a Counselor/Advocate for rape/sexual assault victims. On April 28 we will be having our first ever fundraiser gala (we are a bare bones non-profit....we need all the help we can get). During the gala will be a silent auction of goods and services with 100% of the proceeds going to Rape Crisis of the Southern Tier - our agency. Would you be willing to donate a special piece for our auction? Your name, website, contact info, etc would be prominently displayed alongside your piece (and I would be willing to photograph it on the table and with the winning bidder, if that person doesn't mind being photographed). Also, your name and website info would be in the programs, flyers, etc. as a donor. We expect quite a few people here for the event so it could be a great way for you to advertise and we would appreciate it more than you could know."
Naturally I said yes YES YES! But I cannot even BEGIN to describe how honored I felt to have been asked at all. And of course as a survivor of sexual assault this kind of cause has a such a special place in my heart and I was so thrilled to be able to participate. I'm hoping to complete the piece this week (I'll post pictures if people are interested) and ship it off next week so it will be there in plenty of time for their gala in April.
I'm so excited I can hardly stand it! Cross your fingers! Aside from being a fantastic cause, this is a huge publicity booster for me, which is so beyond cool. :)
Anyway... that's my exciting week... as an (bead) artist

I had my first official beading class last night and it was HUGE success. 3 women came and they were a RIOT. We had a blast, and my boss is thrilled. He asked me to come up with some ideas to found a beading "club" through the store, Not only did they make $45 in profit for the store with the class dues, but all 3 women bought store stuff afterwards. Chris is ecstatic! lol
Here is a shot of the piece i'm working up for the auction in NY. It's turqoise rounds and chips, and jet shell hoops. It looks incredible.
When I'm done it will have a matching bracelet and earrings as well, and all clasps will be sterling silver.
:)

Thanks! I have that turqoise piece all ready to go, but am really hoping my rhodonite beads arrive in time for me to do another with rhodonite (a very pretty pink stone) instead. Rhodonite is assiciated with calming anxiety and creating inner peace from chaos and ultimately it's my #1 choice for the Rape Auction piece... but the turqoise is there in case my rhodonite doesn't arrive in time :)

My rhodenite beads came!! Which means last night I completed my piece for the auction exactly the way I wanted it!
Rhodonite is a pink stone with black webbing (a lot like the black webbing on Turqoise). The stones I got are a lot smaller than I'd originally intended (silly me forgot to check the measurements before hitting the order button), and they're much darker in color than I anticipated. But the piece came out BEAUTIFUL.
From one source: "Rhodonite does for us what paying attention to nature always does for us. It softens our needs. It helps us put petty things behind us. It reminds us that leisure is important and that there's a bigger picture we often lose sight of. We pay attention to small things like the petals of tiny white daisies, the gossamer wings of a dragonfly, or a leaf pressed so long into a stone it has become part of it. That's the experience and wisdom of rhodonite."
From another: "Rhodonite is a stone of grace and elegance. It decreases anxiety while increasing attention to detail. It works beneficially on the heart chakra, opening one to unconditional love and increased service to mankind. It is also a calming stone. Rhodonite is also a stone of contrasts. The bright pinks indicate energy that enhances passionate love. The shiny black indicates grounding energy. This stone can help one have a passionate love that is also grounded. Physically it has been known to help with emphysema, joint inflammation, light sensitivity, strep throat and heart disorders."
