My Dad has done it again!!!

Hi everyone -

Well I get this call from my mom today and she said that my dad had just arrived home from the hospital.

My first thought was "what now"...lol.  She explained that he accidentally put a 4-5 inch bolt through his hand and they did surgery late last night.  He was home now and on Monday they'll see what kind of lasting damage was done.

I talked with my dad and asked him how in the world did he do this.  He explained that it wasn't easy but that he was grinding the head of the bolt making a cutsie wheelbarrel for a county affair, the grinder hit it at a bad angle and the end that he was holding went straight into his hand.  Luckily it didn't go through the whole way.  Anyway, he said going into his hand was the "easy" part but taking it out was the painful part because it was a threaded bolt with threads on it.  UGH!!!

I told my dad that him and grinders just don't mix and that I was taking away his grinder - lol.  He agreed.  You see about 6 or 7 years ago my dad had another grinder accident where it exploded on him and the shards cut an area very close to his groin.  He hit a main artery and was rushed into surgery.

I swear this man has the same 9 lives as a cat...  This month he'll be celebrating his 77th birthday and retired at the age of 51.  Since his retirement he has had...

1)  Hiccups for 3 weeks straight (that was awful) all due to stress of youngest child leaving home after raising kids for 30 years straight.  He took us kids leaving pretty hard.
2)  Tore his chest wall while under a truck that started to roll down a hill.
3)  1st grinder accident
4)  Carroded Artery Surgery
5)  Quintuple Bypass Surgery which included taking veins from both legs
6)  And now his latest.....  Bolt in Hand.

Before his retirement he was healthy and pretty much accident free except for a knife that went through one of his hands when he was wittling a trophy for his cribbage buddies.

So.... as you can see this man has been through the mill and has us constantly on pins and needles as to what will happen next.  He's got more scars then Frankenstein on a good day - LOL.

Oh geesh gotta love him.  I'm heading up there tomorrow with Anthony.

I'll let you know how he's doing tomorrow evening or Sunday morning.

I'd say you will have to do what I do. I told my folks (both of them) that I was going to invest in bubble wrap and that they were going to be wrapped in it.

Hope he gets better and has full use of his hand.

I saw my dad yesterday and he is doing fine, but in ALOT of pain.  I kept telling him to keep his one above his heart on his chest because that's what they had me do when I had surgery on both my hands.  He said "yeah they did say something about that".

Trina - I loved that idea of bubblewrap so I hope you don't mind that I mentioned that to my dad.  Told him that he was "grounded from the grinder and if he didn't watch it I was going to bring bubblewrap up there and wrap him in it".  He laughed.

They'll check him out tomorrow and see if there's any cartlidge damage.  I guess that when they did surgery they couldn't do too much but clean out the wound because that 4" bolt (flat tipped on both ends) was really dirty.

I saw the bolt.  They gave it to my dad as a sourvenir.  So now he was bent coins and keys from the last grinder accident and a bolt for this one - UGH.

I gotta tell ya something funny though.   My dad used to sing this song to us kids about a donkey singing sweetly.  He sings it everytime he's taken into the ER.  When they were taking my dad to surgery the orthopedic surgeon heard it and the next day he came up to my dad and asked for the words to that song so he can teach it to his kids while they were camping this week.  How cute is that!!!   Actually EVERY surgery my dad has had, he sings to the nurses while being wheeled down to surgery.  He even did that before his Bypass and you could still hear him singing from outside the doors where we couldn't go.  LOL  The nurses just LOVE him!!!

A donkey singing sweetly?  Never heard of it.  I hope he is doing ok and getting better use of his hands.  Hopefully by now, the pain has subsided some.  I had to laugh when I read about the bubble wrap.  You buy the bubble wrap and I will send you the tape. lol  Guys will be guys when it comes to accidents and they say women should never use power tools! evileye

What's the latest on him Stacey?

He's doing fine.  Went to the doctor and they decided that there is no damage mainly because he can wiggle his fingers and move his hand... well somewhat while it swollen.  He has the stitches removed next Monday.

Today is his 77th birthday!!!!  I called him this evening and mom and him went to the Casino for a seafood dinner and a little gambling.  They're so cute!!!!
